10 Teens Get Real About Why They Don’t Wear Makeup

“I actually feel more powerful when I’m not wearing makeup.”

Makeup can be ~so~ addictive. There are always new gels, glitter eyeliners, and brushes to want ASAP. But even though beauty products are super fun and can totally help you establish your independent style, it should also be remembered that not all teens around the world always wear makeup.

That’s why I asked 10 teens to talk about why they willfully choose to not wear makeup:

“Makeup just isn’t my aesthetic right now.” —Simone, 13

“I love wearing makeup sometimes, but sometimes I just decide not to because I also think I’m beautiful without it.” —Roxanne, 13

“Makeup is cool, but I think I’m powerful and beautiful without it too.” —Tess, 13

“I actually think it’s really important for people my age to remember that makeup totally not necessary to be beautiful. Beauty is a social construct!” —Meyer, 15

“With SnapChat filters, who needs makeup anymore?” —Allison, 15

“I think there is a lot of pressure on young people to wear makeup and look a certain way. That’s why I don’t wear makeup. I don’t like conforming to the rules society has set up for me.” —Gracie, 13

“I actually feel more powerful when I’m not wearing makeup.” —Chloe, 13

“I like to focus on my school work while I’m at school, so not wearing makeup helps me do that.” —Hannah, 16

“I do buy makeup, and put it on sometimes to play around with different looks and facets of my identities. Makeup can be helpful for that. However, I choose to not wear makeup on a regular day basis because I like to remember that no matter how I dress and present my body, at my core: I’m still me.” —Kelsey, 19

“From my Instagram, you would never tell I didn’t wear makeup. But I choose not to because I want people to see me rather than my winged eyeliner.” —Rebecca, 19

Reminder: It’s totally fun to cover your face with makeup! However, if you don’t like wearing makeup, you’re not the only one. Your body is yours, and how you choose to present it to the world is completely your choice.
