Breakup rumors have been swirling for a long time — and for good reason.
Camila Cabello is officially leaving Fifth Harmony — and if you’ve been following the band closely for the past year and a half, you’re probably not surprised. Breakup rumors have been swirling for a long, long time. We dug into the evidence and found 10 separate situations that pointed to potential problems for 5H. Did you see the split coming?
1. September 2015: Camila foresees a separation.
When Latina asked Camila if she thought the band would eventually split up, she gave a pretty blunt answer: “Honestly, I think we all do,” she said. In hindsight, that feels like a pretty clear sign of what was to come.
She continued, “We’d be lying if we all said this is a picture-perfect thing, like we all completely agreed on the album track list and what the sound and the music-video treatment would be like, which usually happens in bands who grew up together. But for manufactured bands, it’s harder. The cool part is that we allow one another to do our own thing within this thing. I think it’s healthy because if not, personally, I would go insane.”
After Camila’s super-honest interview with Latina shook up the fandom, the band went on defense to prove just how together they really are. They Instagrammed shots from the recording studio, where they explained they were hard at work on album number two.
2. November 2015: She releases her first song without 5H.
When Camila announced that she’d be dropping a duet with Shawn Mendes (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”), some 5H fans interpreted the move as a sign she wanted to leave the band behind.
3. December 2015: Camila admits her schedule is taking a toll.
After the band’s Twitter account shared a photo of Normani, Lauren, Dinah, and Ally in the studio without Camila, some fans worried that C. wasn’t in the studio because she was too busy performing “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Shawn Mendes at Jingle Ball.Camila shut down the rumors on Twitter, explaining that she’s never missed a 5H commitment.
4. December 2015: She’s not included in a behind-the-scenes photo.
Two weeks later, the band’s lawyer, Dina LaPolt, tweeted a selfie captioned, “Love these girls!” Dinah, Ally, Lauren, and Normani were all in the photo and tagged in the tweet, but Camila was nowhere to be seen.
5. February 2016: Lauren says the group won’t last another decade.
The girls looked amaaaazing on the cover of Seventeen, but if you read the interview closely, you could spot trouble. When asked where they’d be in 10 years, Lauren replied, “I don’t see us still doing this.”
6. February 2016: Normani says the girls have “different visions.”
The same month, Normani told Cliché, “In the beginning, we all had intentions of pursuing solo careers,” she said, referring to the fact that each girl auditioned for the X Factor as a soloist. “I’m still an individual, as well as the others, meaning we have slightly different visions and aspirations. We have a ton of work [to do] and much more to accomplish as Fifth Harmony before that happens.”
She added, “Musically, I committed to four other people, and I have an obligation to them. The way I see it, my blood, sweat, and tears are not just for me; it’s for Fifth Harmony as well.”
7. March 2016: Harry Styles offers his help.
Normani’s comments sparked another wave of breakup rumors. Soon, Dinah told ET Online that Harry Styles had offered the 5H girls tips on how to stay together as a band.
“I remember we were in rehearsals and he came up to us and told us as a group, ‘All five of you should be on the same page and the closest things to each other because around all five of you there are gonna be people that are gonna come and try to snatch you, people are gonna try to break you guys apart,” she told ET Online. “So, as long as you five are your best friends, that’s the most important.'”
It’s a sweet story — but it’s also worth noting that Harry might not have felt compelled to offer that advice if the breakup rumors weren’t swirling in the first place. Sometimes, where there’s smoke, there really is fire.
8. April 2016: Camila isn’t hanging out with the rest of 5H.
While four-fifths of the band attended a Britney Spears concert in Las Vegas… … Camila was in the studio recording a solo project with Diplo. Some 5H fans worried that Camila’s heart was in the wrong place — too focused on her solo projects, not focused enough on the band. But Camila fired back, explaining that all five girls can do whatever they please during their off-time (including recording their own music or hanging out with each other!).
9. October 2016: Camila releases her second song without 5H.
After the drama surrounding “I Know What You Did Last Summer” called Camila’s allegiance to the group into question, some fans were surprised to see her collaborate with another artist: Machine Gun Kelly, on the track “Bad Things.”
“Is the teen separating herself from her singing sisters to springboard her solo career?” Perez Hilton asked. In hindsight, it sort ofseems that way.
10. December 2016: Camila’s stage wardrobe is weirdly different.
During what would be the group’s last performance as a fivesome, Camila subtly stood out by wearing white lace-up pants instead of black shorts.Normally, the girls all wear slightly different looks in the same color palette (like they did at their second-to-last performance). It’s one thing for them each to have their own look, but if four girls match and one don’t, the girls might be sending a message through their choice of clothing.
